When The NLP Trainer Becomes The Student

"Lock In The Changes" with NLP

Or, should it be, “When the NLP Student Becomes The Trainer”?

As an NLP Master Practitioner and Trainer, Every once in a while you come across an NLP client or NLP student who teaches you far more than you teach them.

Or to put it still another way, when the teacher is ready to become a student, the student who is ready to become a teacher appears….

William Wood ( NorthernUtahHypnosis.com ) took my nlp practitioner and Master practitioner trainings with me. He found me at a time when I was taking a break from doing trainings and gearing up to begin putting all my NLP tools to work for myself as a singer/songwriter (Positive-Songs.com).

He asked if I would be willing to do a one on one training with him. I agreed. And he flew to the Albany New York area without complaint (check out my last article where I talk about this characteristic of an excellent client or student).

I deeply believe that people appear in our lives for a purpose. I feel that Will showed up in my life to teach me a number of things. One of them was that I deeply and truly love teaching NLP,  Hypnosis and Time Line Therapy™ and I love learning and practicing it as much as I love writing songs.

This became really clear a few days ago…

Here’s the point of this article: I’m in a great relationship with a beautiful woman and we are now in to our 3rd year of living together…

And we are triggering the hell out of each other. Our “STUFF is UP” as we like to say in the transformation business…

I’m a highly trained and, (if I say so myself) pretty damn good NLP practitioner. And like a lot of coaches and therapists, sometimes you are just too in the middle of your own stuff to be any use to yourself.

My girlfriend Marylynn is also a highly trainer practitioner in her own right of “The Work” of Byron Katie.

Like millions of other couples we are perfectly matched to trigger each other’s stuff in myriad small and large ways so that we are struggling…. We have great days when we are full of love and connection and in just moments all that love can turn into something that doesn’t feel so good…And we start questioning whether we are going insane!

We know from our training and our experience that this is part of the healing gift we bring each other. The things we trigger in each other are issues that are up for healing.

The challenge we have is we both know we are each creating our own stories and dramas. We also don’t see the point in going to some talk therapy thing. We learned our leading edge techniques because traditional therapy didn’t help us with this…

We also both see that we’ve done this dance before in other relationships. We both sincerely love each other and want to be supportive of each other’s growth and healing…

So I was just checking in with Will the other day because I hadn’t heard from him in a while and it turned out he was in the middle of a training. In fact he had just learned a new (for me) NLP pattern that he was just itching to try out on some willing “victim”, I mean “subject”… I mean… “volunteer”:

It was a perfect technique to collapse a negative emotional “trigger” or even an allergy.

So he spent about 20 minutes with me on the phone while he was driving in to his day of training… (yes that’s how good Will is!)

He went through the new technique a few times with me and he finished with a bit of hypnotic languaging to “lock in the changes”… all I remember from the hypnosis part was that every time I saw the color RED I would strengthen and reinforce the new behavior and neurological pattern. Of course I started seeing the color RED everywhere!

The next day something happened that would have normally triggered my feelings of hurt…

My reaction?

NOTHING.

It was like the lock had been changed and the old key no longer worked. A very good feeling!

The day after that Marylynn was really triggered by something I did or didn’t do and was deep in her pattern. Again, I was able to not take it personally. I sat with her and just focused on keeping my heart open and beaming love at her. I focused on my breathing. I relaxed consciously and grounded myself into the earth and just stayed present with her. The gift for me was that because I wasn’t triggered into my own stuff. I was able to be a container for her.

At one point I made the mistake of trying to hug her and she was so ticked off at me that she just pushed me away. In the past that would have HURT. Big time. This time? I just gave her some space and went off to my Man Cave office in the basement to get some work done…

10 minutes later she came in and was soft and gentle and apologetic. Again, I didn’t feel like any apology was necessary. I wasn’t waiting for her to come and apologize. I was still open. I never closed down.

This was a huge breakthrough. I don’t know if I described how excruciating this pattern of ours has been for both of us in the last 2 years. We kept working on it and not really resolving it. We both know that if we give up and go off into other relationships we will just repeat the patterns.

This time it feels like we made a major shift.

So I just want to give props to William Wood.  The guy is an awesome practitioner of NLP, Hypnosis, Time Line etc. I just feel tremendously grateful to have been able to be his student the other day.

p.s. 2 years ago when Will was taking my private NLP practitioner training I taught him to to the NLP Like to Dislike Script. Since it was a private training, I was the “volunteer” and I chose to stop liking coffee so much. I was drinking several cups in the morning and a few in the afternoon. I now only have coffee once or twice a week… Just sayin’ William Wood is the real deal.

Do Your NLP Clients Measure Up?

Do Your NLP Client's "Measure Up"?

Three Key Traits That Indicate A Successful Outcome With An NLP Client…

In my 10 years of practicing NLP I’ve worked with hundreds of clients.

While I am almost always able to get excellent results with all the tools at my disposal: NLP, Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy ® Techniques, EFT, Energy Work, etc. There seem to be 3 key traits that the people who get the very best results all share.

I’ll do my best to share them with you. This is by no means a scientific study. It is only what has become apparent to me over the years as a few possible indicators of a person who is really and truly ready to transform their lives.

The clients who are ready pretty much always…

  1. Are willing to do whatever it takes to either get to me by plane, or train or pony express. They don’t complain about having to travel to see me. On the other hand I’ve had prospective clients in the next town over whine about how far away my office is… (not a good sign)
    .
  2. Or if they are going to be working with me on the phone, they carve out time in their schedules for their sessions no matter how busy they are. They make it happen to accommodate my availability to see them.
    .
  3. They don’t quibble about my fee. They “get” that my time is valuable and they don’t expect me to spend my time and energy working with them for nothing. The flip side of this is that they value themselves enough (despite what their problem is or the pain they are in) to commit their financial resources to the process of transforming their lives.

The flip side of the coin is the prospective client who either tries to work out a deal or who seems offended that their health insurance coverage doesn’t cover it. Whenever I’ve been foolish enough to reduce my fee at the prospects insistence, it hasn’t been good. It is really a test to see if they (and you) value the work.

Here’s just one example of an NLP client who was AWESOME:

A few weeks ago I got an email from a young man who was experiencing so much painful social phobia that he had to drop out of school. He was heading home to a country in the far east and was passing through New York City on his way. Now. I am in Albany NY which is several hours north of NYC. He didn’t complain or whine about that. He just got himself a train ticket and got himself here ready to work on his “project”. For a guy with social phobia that took extraordinary courage. Guts. Determination. Motivation. Commitment.

When he got here he was at an anxiety level of 8 or 9 (on a scale of 10). When he left at the end of the day he was at a level of 1 or 2.

The thing is, when you’ve done this as long as I have and particularly in the anxiety relief practice that I specialize in, you get a lot of folks who say they want to get better, but when it comes to putting their money where their mouth is, perhaps only 1 in 10 inquiries results in a client who is committed to paying the price in time and money to show up and do the work of change.

That is not a criticism of folks who aren’t ready. It’s just the way it is. Not everybody who is in pain and who wants to create a better life is actually able to take the steps necessary to begin. Change can be extremely frightening for many people (particularly anxiety sufferers who are envisioning a worst case scenario anyway).

Milton Erickson would often assign an “ordeal” to a patient before he would consent to work with them. For many of my clients it is an “ordeal” just to show up because they may have severe phobias or anxiety.

The bottom line is that I do not make the changes for my clients. Only they can make the changes they want to make. So it is quite important to be able to determine which clients are a good match for you and which ones will grind you down.

Tad James told a story about a guy who said he worked with John Grinder and didn’t get the result. Then he worked with Richard Bandler and didn’t get the result. Then he went to Robert Dilts and several other NLP giants. Didn’t get the results he wanted. So he wanted to work with Tad but he’d spent all his money on the previous attempts and was now broke. Would Tad work with him for free…please?

The dange we fall into as practitioners is allowing our own egos to kick in and think. “Well, I’m obviously better than those other practitioners. I’m SURE I can help this guy.”

WARNING! This is the kind of client to politely decline.

You probably won’t decline. You’ll probably get caught in this trap just like I have occasionally. Just make sure you “use” the experience to learn. Remember if you end up working with a “difficult” client that it can generate a lot of growth for you as a practitioner.

Also remember, there is no failure. There is only feedback! Just remember to be gentle with yourself and your own learning curve ok?

There is an often repeated story about a guy who saw a butterfly struggling to escape it’s cocoon. The butterfly was struggling and struggling and making very slow progress. The man felt like he should do something to help. He managed to assist the butterfly to escape it’s confining cocoon and thought he had done a good thing… but because the butterfly actually required the physical struggle of pulling itself out of the cocoon in order to properly pump blood through it’s wings, it now could not fly.

Because the man “helped” it, the butterfly was weak and misshapen. This story applies to us as practitioners as well as to our clients.

It is important to remember as holistic practitioners that our clients are in a process. Our job is to show them whats’ possible and to give them tools to transform their lives. Our job is to teach them how to use those tools. But ultimately it is the client’s job to USE the tools to make their own changes.

That’s why any client that isn’t willing to pay the price or show up is not a bad person. Just not ready.

Does that make sense?

What I love about NLP is that it is ultimately about each of us learning how to run our own minds to create the results we want in our lives. There is no higher purpose or path.

Without the “mistakes” and “missteps” along my own path I would not have as rich a resource to bring to bear with my clients.

While we are bound and determined to help our clients create excellent and positive results in their lives, with a little practice we can sense which clients are truly ready to do their part and which ones are expecting us to wave our magic wands and “make it all better” without the client having to change their fundamental thought processes which created the problem in the first place…

At the completion of my NLP Trainer’s training Tad James said to me, “You don’t need clients. You need successful clients.” What I thought he meant at the time was I needed clients who had a lot of money. In retrospect I don’t think that’s what he really meant. I think he meant that you need clients who are willing to do their part of the process to successfully transform their lives.

I’ve ignored my own advice above on many occasions only to be frustrated by a client who was also frustrated because they “thought NLP was this great thing.” So just pay attention to the indicators.

1. Are they willing to do whatever iut takes to get there?

2. Are they willing to show up on time ready to work?

3. Are they willing to pay a fair fee for your services?

if the answer to any of the above is “no”, then your answer should be a polite, “No thanks. We’re not a match.”

All the best!

Why NLP Sucks

Somtimes NLP sucks. It just does. Here’s why.

NLP is without a doubt one of the best maps for running our minds, bodies and relationships that has ever been teased out of the process of being human. Essentially NLP is a “process model” of how human beings perceive and project the world. In short it’s a handy map for how we create and interact with “reality.”

All fine. All good. Wonderful really.

Because it is an elegant model of the human mind, understanding NLP enables a person to quite literally transform his or her experience of the world overnight.

We know for a fact that the mind and body are connected. Therefore thinking crappy dysfunctional thoughts creates crappy dysfunctional bodies and relationships.

Change your thinking. And your results can change. FAST.

And here’s why NLP sucks:

Somehow NLP newbies seem to think that changing their thoughts and learning a few NLP techniques is some kind of magic bullet or pill that will make them masters of everything by the end of whatever NLP training they’ve signed up for.

Here’s the trigger for my rant:

Yesterday I got an email from a prospective NLP student who wanted to do an intensive 1 on 1 private training with me.

“I heard about NLP about a decade ago and been reading about its miraculous merits. I also learnt of Richard Bandler and DHE. To cut to the chase I want to know how much would it cost for me to undergo a 1-2 days intensive training. In 1-2 days could you train me to-

1) Visualize intensly (full inner submodality awareness-taste/touch/feel/smell etc),
2) State control (happy/glad/concentration/focused, confidence, deep relaxation, quieting of the mind etc,)
3) Goal achievement (to have strong discipline and determination)
4)Clear thinkning (to help with talking/writing/learning etc).
5) Impersonal [sic] skills-better storytelling, readin verbal/nonverbal language and expressing my self better…

…with what I’ve read about nlp and hypnosis, my objectives are very much so possible in 2 days. I wouldnt want to undergo such an intensive training just to have to practice some more for days or weeks to get the results. [italics and emphasis mine] I want a trainer that can get me those results DURING THE TRAINING.”

There’s an old story about a guy who is sitting in front of a cold wood burning stove. “As soon as you give me heat, I’ll put in the wood!”

That’s a little bit of what this guy is doing. He wants to spend no more than 2 days and in that time he wants it all and he doesn’t “…want to undergo such an intensive training just to have to practice some more for days or weeks to get the results…”

So where are people getting these ideas about NLP as the key to instant mastery of the known Universe?

I totally agree that NLP can give us amazing results in a much shorter period of time than many other modalities of personal change and development.

And ultimately there is a difference between a new way of thinking and developing actual skills.

Here’s an example: let’s say you grew up in an isolated mountain town in out Mongolia. You basic mode of transportation is walking, or if you’re really rich, a horse. Then one day Richard Bandler shows up in your town with a helicopter.

It seems pretty damn miraculous. And first you’re like “ooooo, ahhhhhhh, This guy is a GOD! I WANT TO FLY TOO! JUST LIKE RICHARD BANDLER!”

The process of discovering that a better way is possible takes only a few moments. But if you climb into the cockpit of that helicopter with just a few instructions and no practice you are going to crash and burn. Seriously.

I don’t know how long it takes to really develop mastery of flying a helicopter. You can learn the basics perhaps in 2 days. But the experience necessary to handle all the possible emergencies and weather challenges not to mention mechanical failures and crash landings and high winds etc. Well that’s a lifetime project.

You can model the excellent thoughts of an excellent helicopter pilot but you still have to put your butt in the seat and get real world experience.

Does that make sense? Do you see what I mean? How does that feel to you? Can you resonate?

There have always been people willing to tell you whatever you want to hear to sell you something. And there have always been people who want so badly to believe that they will pay through the nose to buy smoke and mirrors.

We call them “Con Men” and “Suckers.”

I’ve met some NLP practitioners who came through 3 and 4 day NLP trainings. I definitely wouldn’t trust them to fly MY helicopter.

We are called NLP “Practioners” not NLP “Learned it All in 2 Day-ers”.

In over ten years of practice I still learn new things about myself and my clients. I still experience situations that I was not prepared for in my NLP training. But the process of thinking I learned and the foundation of having an attitude of wanton curiosity and willingness to experiment has enabled me to survive and thrive.

The other thing that people seem to forget is that like the veteran helicopter pilot who makes everything seem so easy, Richard Bandler and other NLP legends have been PRACTICING for a long time… only about 30 YEARS. Not 2 days my friend. THIRTY YEARS.

So I guess NLP doesn’t really suck.

But the attitude that seems to be fostered by the marketing “geniuses” selling NLP definitely does. And the willingness of people to believe whatever they want to believe is probably going to be with us for a very long time.

I’m sure we’ll see a 15 minute NLP certification training in the near future.

In truth the same mind set shows up in internet marketing as well. Everybody wants to make a million dollars sitting on the beach. But the reality is that massive success and mastery in any field requires time and um… something called… work.

If you want to learn NLP in a way that is solid and congruent for a life time of excellence and mastery my next training is in July. It’s a 9 day, hands-on intensive bootcamp. Preceded by a full online training that you can do at your own pace.

The real training begins when you take your new concepts and skills home and PRACTICE them. Remember learning to walk? You probably don’t. But I guarantee you didn’t learn it in only 2 days. Now it seems easy. But once upon a time you didn’t know you could even do it. Then you realized you could walk so you started pulling yourself up and falling down. you did that for quite a while until eventually you managed a few wobbly steps.

NOW, it’s easy. NLP is like that. Let’s stop fooling ourselves, roll up our sleeves and PRACTICE.

6 Things You Can Do To Change The Economy

6 things you can do to change your personal economy

The past few years have seen an economic meltdown the likes of which most of us alive have never experienced. It’s all around us. The Stock market is at 1980′s lows. Companies world wide are falling like bowling pins. Millions of people are out of work or facing imminent layoffs. The news is full of grim experts like “Dr. Doom” predicting the end of the world as we know it. As I checked my yahoo e-mail this morning I was greeted with this headline:

Even ‘Dr. Doom’ Is Scared: Economy Much Worse Than Roubini Predicted

Don’t follow the link above! I only put it in here to improve my search engine ranking. :o )

So a few thoughts and some options that I am using myself to stay hopeful and positive in spite of all the gloom and doom around you.

  1. STOP LISTENING TO THE NEWS! or at least use a grim news story to improve your search engine rankings like I did above. After all that’s what the news folks are using to make their businesses prosper. Think about it! What businesses do you know are still doing really well? Who benefits if you are freaked out? The more eyeballs the News media can get the more advertising they can sell. So I’ll say it again. STOP WATCHING AND LISTENING TO THE NEWS! BTW do you know what city is booming and growing in these hard times? Washington DC! Talk about thriving in a crisis!
    .
  2. Listen to positive, hopeful music. I‘ve created a special website to help lift your spirits it’s called: Positive-Songs.com  You can get a “Positive Song-a-day” to burn it into your Rostromedial Pre-Frontal Cortex (that’s where catchy tunes get “stuck”).
    .
  3. Make a list of the miracles in your life and all the abundance you have right now. I’ve said this before but it bears repeating. You did not have to mine your own salt eh? You have people who do that for you! If you are reading this that means you have a computer and access to the world wide web! You are RICH. Focus on right now. At this very moment do you have clothes? Do you have running water? Do you have enough food for today? Do you have heat? Got shoes? Socks?
    .
It sounds simple but it’s all about shifting your focus from one of lack to one of abundance. Speaking of the internet, there are huge opportunities for people who understand the new Web 2.0 social media and how to connect to prospects and customers on line.
    .
  4. Say this to your self and write it out by hand 100 times (yes 100 times): “Why Does It Work Out Better Than I Can Possibly Imagine?” This will begin to re-program your unconscious mind to filter for good news rather than bad. Go ahead. I dare you. No. I double dare you. No. I double dog dare you! This is one of my own most used anti-anxiety practices.
    .
  5. Go to CRUSHAnxiety.com. I have some significant tips there about how to stop anxiety (even financial anxiety, or doomsday anxiety). For way less than a talk therapy session or a bottle of scotch you can discover 7 secrets to stop anxiety and panic attacks fast.
    .
  6. If you need serious help ask for it. Either from me or from another NLP practitioner. Sometimes a big part of making significant changes is simply the act of asking for help. I work with select clients one on one in person, over the phone or using Skype. Because of how rich we are in technology, you can work with me from anywhere in the world!
    .
Many of my clients have learned how to destroy their fears and anxious thinking patterns and gone on to double, triple and even quintuple their incomes (even in these scary times).
    .
If you need help I can often get people significant relief in just one or two NLP phone sessions. Some folks need more support. I charge either by the hour or a flat fee. I will also consider barter. So please do not let your current beliefs in “lack” stop you from getting help. E-mail me at mark[at] MarkShepard.com or call my office at (888)598-7709

So just a few thoughts and resources for you. Please take advantage of whatever feels right for you. Remember:

  • We can not change the world but we can change how we respond to the world.
  • We can change how we perceive the world.
  • We can change how we interact with the world.
  • We can use these challenging times as a motivational tool to think outside the box of our old patterns and routines.
  • We can use these times as opportunity triggers.
  • Are there problems you can help other people solve?
  • Are there talents and abilities you’ve always wanted an opportunity to use?
  • Now’s the time to start giving yourself permission to explore them.

I love you all and send you my best wishes and hopes for you all day every day!

Mark

3 NLP Tips To Get Over Your Ex FAST

3 NLP tips to get over an ex lover fast (without voodoo doll)

I recently read an article on E-Harmony Advice about how to get over an ex lover: Making Room for Love – Is a previous relationship preventing you from finding new love? Learn how to stop letting that ex block you from moving forward with these seven tips.

7 very nice thoughts. But typical of what the dating and relationship industry does. They tell you 7 nice things you “should” do that if you really did do them would definitely help you. BUT…

In the midst of an emotional storm these “sensible” and “logical” bits of advice basically get lost.

So I thought I’d weigh in with a few NLP tools for getting over an ex. Trust me on this. These work and I’ve had to use them…a lot (damn, I’m not quite sure I like how that sounds).

Anyway here they are and feel free to apply them to anyone who you need to “get over”, could be an ex boss, or even the old “Critical Parent” a lot of us walk around reacting to.

NLP “How To Get Over Your Ex” Tool #1:
When you think of your “Ex” do you have a picture on your internal mental screen? Where is it? Typically it’s in the center, close, in color and bright. Just notice though where it is for you.

Solution: Now. Shrink it down and push it farther away at the same time you make it dim. Now how do you feel? If you’ve actually done this, the intensity should have gone down in a pleasant way. Repeat as necessary until when you think of your Ex, there’s no “charge” or their picture stays small and dim and far away.

NLP “How To Get Over Your Ex” Tool #2:
When you think of your “Ex” do you keep seeing the movies of all the good times you had together? The wonderful first attraction and hot sex you used to have?

Solution: Drop those old internal “home movies” of all the good times to the lower left hand corner of your internal screen, shrink ‘em down and make them disappear. Blip! Now pull up the reel of all the selfish, annoying, frustrating, unnacceptable things you experienced that caused you two to be “Ex’s” in the first place and put them on an endless loop right in front of you, close, and bright. Guaranteed you’ll stop thinking of all the “wonderful” times.

NLP “How To Get Over Your Ex” Tool #3:
one of the problems with getting over an ex is the false belief that you’ll never find anyone better. We can get vulnerable to our ex’s good qualities (and they do have them) when we get lonely or run pictures on our mental screen of being alone. So other than actively getting out and meeting lots of new people which is a different subject altogether, in addition to dimishing the pictures of the ex and running movies of the bad times to remind you why you’re not together anymore…

Solution: You need to pull up a vision of what you want on to your internal movie screen. Is there a whole line of eager suitors waiting for the chance to get to know you? Are you happily persuing your own passions and interests and having fun in your life regardless of a significant other? Well that’s what you need to be doing now. See yourself in the picture doing all the things you would be doing if you were the kind of person who would attract the kind of person you most want to attract.

Really. Create a movie in your mind of exactly the kind of person and relationship you really and truly want to have. You may need to make a list here. Every time you find yourself saying “I don’t want….” turn it around into what you do want. Take all the positive qualities you want in a partner and make a movie of that. Bring it in close and make it big and bright.

How does that feel?

The next step is to figure out where to find people with those qualities and to develop the skills of rapport building and modern Jedi NLP persuasion power so you can fish where the fish are and invite them into the boat with just what bait they find delicious (you). This is where I shamelessly plug my Modern Jedi NLP Training where you can learn a lot more of this stuff.

So practice these three NLP “Getting Over Your Ex” tools and leave a comment below to let me know how you’re doing with them.

I also do one on one coaching over the phone and can typically help you with this kind of challenge a lot faster than you may think possible.

This is a must see for any person, NLP student or practitioner in business, education or wherever, who seeks to communicate his or her ideas and persuade or educate…or change, or lead….

I love the power and tonality Taylor Mali uses in his speaking. You can not watch this without feeling something.

Modern Jedi NLP Training Reviewed

Video Review of the Modern Jedi NLP Training by William Wood, CHT, Hypnotherapist & NLP Practitioner in Northern Utah

Transcript:
I just got done taking Mark Shepard’s Modern Jedi NLP Training. I just wanted to say I was truly impressed with it through all phases.

I was a certified Hypnotherapist already before I came into the training. So I knew a great deal about the general frame work of NLP.  In fact I had been through several short courses on NLP. One of the reasons I personally decided to work with Mark Shepard was because I found his program in terms of the on-line materials was much clearer than any of the material that Id’ gone through from any other NLP trainer (including several well known NLP trainers out there).

I found his manuals to be very specific and to the point. I found his assignments and tasks that he gave me to do, to be helpful from my business stand point. I already had a hypnotherapy practice that was running, and just by doing the things he asked me to do, my business online presence became the number one hypnotherapy search that comes up on Google for my city within 3 months of doing his assignments.  In that process, not only did I learn NLP but I started deriving a direct benefit monetarily from his suggestions and training. One suggestion Mark made actually increased my income so significantly, it more than paid for the training.

And then when I came to the NLP training…and this is another reason why I selected Mark Shepard’s program over a number of other programs..I knew I would have a greater level of individualized attention and coaching from Mark. I have found Mark’s coaching to be best in class. .. I have literally at this point studied as a hypnotherapist under some of the best hypnotherapy instructors in the nation. I have studied with internationally known hypnosis trainers and I find that Mark’s training is on par and in some areas superior to anything that I’ve been through.

If you are looking for a good place to learn NLP, Mark Shepard and his Modern Jedi NLP on-line / hands-on training program is best in class. The cost is comparable or reasonable compared to anything else your going to find.

The level of training you get here is just unbelievable. I’m happy I spent the money I did and I’m fully planning on continuing training with Mark and taking advantage of his coaching. He’s an awesome coach and an awesome trainer.

Don’t hesitate. Start today if you can.
